Atherstone to Ansley 6½ miles

Starting at the Atherstone Heritage Feature, just to the south of the Coleshill Road Bridge No. 41(SP306974), walk along the towpath of the Coventry Canal for 2¼ miles in a direction away from the bridge. Immediately after passing under Bridge 32, leave the towpath and cross the canal over Bridge 31. Walk up Apple Pie Lane to a T-junction, and turn right into Grange Road. After passing ‘The Malt Shovel’ pub turn right at the T-junction, walk to the left of Hartshill Green, cross Castle Road, and turn right along Trentham Road in front of blocks of flats. Take the narrow passageway between the garages and the first bungalow on the left. Follow the waymarked path down steps, across a bridge, and up into the woods of Hartshill Hayes Country Park.

Continue ahead along the marked main trail, ignoring side turnings, and with only one marked turn to the right after about ⅓ mile. Coming to a large open grassy area with extensive views to the northeast, cross towards a redbrick building, bear to the left down a driveway, and through gates to Oldbury Road. Cross and take the waymarked path across a field, and through a gate into a narrow track, which broadens and turns to the left. Ignore an unmarked gate on the left, and shortly after go through the left-hand of two gates to a marked path across fields towards Common Farm. Take care to follow the waymarkers around the farm buildings, and then bear right on the paved driveway, passing through a disused railway embankment.

Go straight over Thorncliffe Way to the junction with Coleshill Road, cross and turn right. After about 150yds take the footpath on the left immediately after the junction with Limes Coppice, and follow it past the end of St Johns Close and through a gate (SP313934) to a waymarked path across the fields, passing to the left of Bret’s Hall Wood, and eventually joining a surfaced lane. Continue past a gate to where the lane bears left by some houses, and take the waymarked path on the right across the fields, through a corner of Barn Moor Wood, and on to a gate leading into a small estate of houses (SP300917). Walk through to the Ansley Heritage Feature at the side of Birmingham Road.

Ansley to Shustoke 8½ miles

Cross the main road, turn right and after about 100yds turn left into the narrow passageway just past ‘Ansley Fish Bar’. Follow the path behind the houses and across a field to a gate giving access to ‘Oakridge Golf Course’ (SP296913). Cross the fairways, taking care to follow the waymarkers, and leave across a footbridge (SP291909). The path ahead crosses the railway and joins Church Lane by Arley House Farm (SP291905). Bear left at the lane, and then right at the next junction into Firtree Lane. Continue for about ⅓ mile, and just before the houses take a waymarked path to the right (SP290900). Follow this path past gardens, between houses and an industrial estate, and finally across a field, to a gate into Spring Hill (SP284895). Go over the road into Stonehouse Lane and continue for about ½mile, until just before the railway bridge turning left up steps to a marked path across the fields to Tipper’s Hill Lane. Cross and go through parkland to a gate (SP278886), and then across fields to Fillongley Mill Farm.

Take care to follow the waymarkers through the garden, crossing a drive, turning right between buildings, and then left up steps, eventually to reach a field, across which a stile leads to Tamworth Road (SP277880). Turn right and after about 100yds turn left onto a surfaced track, which in about ¼ mile meets Black Hall Lane. Turn right and then in about 75yds turn left to another track, Didgley Lane. Follow this for about ½ mile to Pump Lane, turn right and walk for another ⅓ mile. Just before the junction with Green End Road (SP268868) go through a gate on the right and take the waymarked path across the fields to meet a lane near Stone House Farm (SP260876). Turn left into Broad Lane, and then right at the junction into Fillongley Road. About 200yds after passing Collier’s Oak Farm go through a gate on the right and take a waymarked path across the fields to meet Shawbury Lane. Turn left, and at the junction right, walking for about ¼ mile.

Just before meeting Kingshill Lane, go through a gate on the left and follow the waymarked path through Dumble Wood. Keeping the wood to the right, cross a stream, and take the marked path across the fields to come to Moat House Lane (SP231901). Turn left and walk for about ⅓ mile to the junction with Hollyland. Cross straight over and follow the marked fieldpath to Lower Green, and the Shustoke Heritage Feature. Go left into Back Lane, and then left again at Coleshill Road.

Shustoke to Hurley 4½ miles

Walk for ¼ mile to a waymarked path on the right across the fields (SP223908). Follow the path over a footbridge and across the railway to Hoggrills End Lane. Turn left, and then after taking a path to the right just before the railway bridge, continue over the fields to cross a footbridge over the railway, and a stile leading to Station Road. Turn right, and after passing the Whitacre Heritage Feature and ‘The Swan Inn’, right again into Middle Lane. Cross the railway bridge, and walk for about ⅓ mile taking a waymarked footpath to the left opposite Bakehouse Lane. Follow the path over the fields to Coventry Road (SP225935).

Cross the main road into a surfaced drive between houses, leading to a marked path through an avenue of trees, across a large field, and along an unsurfaced lane to Foul End Lane (SP239947). Cross into Dexter Lane and walk for ⅔ mile before turning right into Knowle Hill, Hurley. Continue for a further ⅓ mile, passing Highview, to a waymarked surfaced track just after the last new houses on the left, and opposite Holly Farm.

Hurley to Atherstone 6½ miles

Turn left and follow the track past houses, and then a waymarked path across fields to a junction of paths at the rear of a housing estate (SP243961). Turn right and continue for about ⅓ mile on the path which runs along the embankment of a disused colliery line. Turn left down steps, and then right into a field. Cross following the hedgerow on the right to a pathway between hedges, then left to a driveway at the side of houses, leading to Hurley Common. Turn right and walk to the bend in the road. Continue straight on, up a paved drive, to a gate leading to a waymarked path. Follow the path through fields, turning right at a junction of paths (SP242976), and passing to the left of Poplars Farm.

A gate ahead leads to a fenced path to Tamworth Road, Wood End. Cross the road, turn left and then after 50yds right along the marked path between the houses. Cross open land, and then turn right into Boulters Lane, which after about 200yds becomes Lower House Lane. Just after, at the waymarker post (SP252983), take the marked path to the right through fields for about ½ mile, turning left and not crossing a footbridge (SP261982), before going under a disused railway viaduct to join Watery Lane. Turn right and walk for about ⅓ mile, bearing left at Speedwell Lane, to a T-junction opposite Baddesley Ensor Post Office. Turn right into New Street, walk to the junction with Newlands Road, and turn left continuing for about ¼ mile.

At the bend in the road, past the allotments, take the waymarked path to the right across common land, passing the Baddesley Heritage Feature, and meeting a road, ‘The Common’ (SP278977). Cross to Folly Lane, and after walking for about ⅔ mile take a waymarked path to the right, opposite a house and just before the junction with Waste Lane. Follow this disused railway track, ‘The Paddy Line’, for about ⅔ mile to meet the A5 Watling Street. Turn right along the footpath, crossing Merevale Lane at the Holly Lane Roundabout, and then after 300yds, next right into Merevale Road. After passing ‘The Kings Head’, walk to the canal Bridge No. 43 and join the towpath, taking care to head in a direction away from the pub. After ½ mile, and past Atherstone Locks, go under Bridge No. 41 to return to the starting point.
